All major belief systems agree that "compassion" towards others is generally a good thing. However, in the West, the definition usually involves the words sympathy or even pity. Since all living beings are ultimately seen as a part of one's own self, ahimsa (compassion-in-action) becomes more than just sympathy or pity.
