Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Prayer At The Airport

Here's an "ultra local" news story that brightened my week...

At Karma Kitchen last week, several of us met a remarkable couple visiting from out of town. I got to sit with them at our community table, and in between seeing adorable photos of their grandchildren, I was stunned by the colorful yet unsung stories they shared from their wealth of life experience and serendipities -- from accidentally starting a publishing company, to accidentally teaching at an inner city school in Australia after just immigrating from a foreign country and culture, to multiple encounters of receiving remarkable kindness from strangers.

Here's a paraphrase of a story she shared:

"Many years ago, I was at the airport, saying good-bye to my father, who was terminally sick. I had tears in my eyes, and I was struggling, because I thought it would be the last time I would see him.

"A young nun nearby noticed that I was crying. She took my arm and asked me what was wrong.

"I told her, and she simply said, "I will pray for you."

"It was a short encounter, but such disarming kindness was something I never forgot."

That young nun was Mother Teresa.

It's amazing how many people we walk past or cross paths with each day. And how much potential there is to uplift each other and the world, simply by seeing another person and wishing them well.
