Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Grateful Inconvenience

--by ShivaniS, posted Nov 23, 2017

Renovation & building work of our house was due to start last year around May/June...which then got delayed to Sept last year...but we put our plans on hold almost at the last minute as it didn't feel right at the time. Another opportunity came up, earlier this year. Time & energy was spent with another contractor & still things didn't work out so to date we haven't actually gone ahead with the work. On the contrary we have had to start from scratch by working with a new architect, new plans etc. No builder on board yet.
Initially there were feelings of frustration, feeling disheartened, impatience, ....generally a negative reaction as to why the build isn't working out for us...However, with this ongoing delay has come delayed gratification. It has provided me & hubby with an opportunity to start tidying up & decluttering our physical space at home in a huge way. This is gradually freeing up my own mental space allowing me to let go, think more clearly & embrace & accept that things are where they are meant to be so just be! It has also made me appreciate the space I call home, the things I own/no longer want to own & taught me to be grateful that at least I have a home that shelters me, feeds me, gives me warmth.
Margaret Wheatley states in her passage: Element of Surprise: 'What do we do with surprise? What do we do with a world which cannot be known until it is in the process of discovering itself? It requires constant awareness, being present, being vigilant for the newly visible. We need to notice things we weren't looking for, things we didn't know would be important, influence we hadn't thought of, behaviors we couldn't predict.'...
This is so true when life throws any form of curve ball at you. If only we could all work with the curve ball rather than against it, then any situation no matter how inconvenient becomes an emerging opportunity of potential that you would never have discovered otherwise.
