Compassion At The Stop Light

--by mvr0101, posted Oct 1, 2014

I was on my way to a meeting this afternoon when a lady rear-ended me while at a stoplight (she was on her phone & thought the light had turned green). Luckily no one was hurt & only my rear bumper is damaged. While we were exchanging contact information, it turns out that the lady who hit me is driving her mother's car, the insurance is under her mother's name, & her driver's license is invalid. She was clearly shaken up & was in tears as she frantically searched for all of her paperwork. She mentioned that she's on her way to a job interview & is so worried she will be late. Now anyone in my shoes would rightfully be upset & would have called the cops & probably even cussed her out, but seeing how she was clearly distraught, I chose not to add to her grief, as I know that she is stressed out enough already. I patiently took all of her contact information, her mother's policy number, etc. She kept thanking me for being so nice about it & kept fretting about her job interview. Her phone wasn't working (I can tell it was old) so I offered to call her interviewer for her & advise them that she will be late. I left a voicemail for the interviewer (it was legit). We then went our separate ways. Now I know she could have been just acting, & I could have been had, but I can clearly see that she was so distraught & doing her best to cooperate. I know what it feels like to be so scared & under stress, & how getting even just a little bit of compassion goes a long way. I just hope I am lucky enough to have someone show me compassion if I ever need it. (And yes, her mother accepted fault & my claim was approved!)
