Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Listening To A Stranger

--by AnnC, posted Oct 22, 2014

Today when I was at the Dollar Store buying trinkets for the Halloween party the teen center is putting on for the community kids, an older gentleman was having a tough time trying to figure out what to get for his wife. When I asked if I could help, he told me with a big lump in his throat that his wife had had a stroke and was now in a skilled nursing facility. He was purchasing shampoo, toothpaste, etc. and felt out his element as well as being very sad. I helped him find the things he needed and listened sympathetically to his story. After I helped him checkout, I asked him if I could give him a hug. He agreed and hugged me hard. I told him I would pray for his wife (he had shared that his wife had been very involved in their church) and he thanked me over and over again.
