River Time

Played hooky! Took a vacation day to canoe our home river with some friends from animal shelter where i volunteer. All of us are usually focused on "everything that needs to be done" most of the time, so simply choosing to be together doing something that served nothing (on the surface) was huge. Had to get lifejackets on the way to meet them, which meant stopping at a corporate store i generally avoid: allowed my judgmental voice to subside while i noticed the people working there, how they seemed to appreciate having a job, and how it satisfied them to help customers get good deals. Good thing we had the PFDs too, since both canoes biffed it in the same place and we all got soaked. For me, who used to teach canoe lessons, this was also out of my 'routine', and great fun to be playing rookie again, experiencing and surviving (gleefully) what some generally call failure, but we can also choose to embrace as teambuilding!
