While traveling on the highways and byways have we ever thought of those who came before us? There were many explorers and pioneers who left their homes and often their families behind not knowing where they were going or if they would ever return or see them again. They traveled on ships made of wood, powered by wind; small and fragile in comparison to the ships of today. Once they sighted land what did they see? What was their reaction to a landscape so different from what they were familiar with? What made them settle in a particular spot; to build homes, send for their family or to start a new one in a new land? Some were forced from their homes because there was nothing left for them there, some were criminals sent to far off lands instead of being kept in prisons, and others had a wanderlust that compelled them to explore the world. The next time we go for a drive through the countryside let's try imagining what the land would look like without roads, hydro wires, houses and farms and possibly how harsh or welcoming it may have appeared to those who viewed it first.
