Challenge - Day 11:

When I had my knee replacement surgery 3 years ago, I was having a particularly bad night because of a pinched nerve in my lower back. I will never forget the kindness of the nurse that I had that night. He went above and beyond to help relieve my pain and discomfort.

So, to pay it forward, I talked to the nurses at the oncology center where I go with my friend for chemo every week and have made plans to bring in treats or something to brighten the drab, colorless room once a week.

This week I am filling small colorful "favor" boxes with treats for each patient and in subsequent weeks, I plan to make cookies, buy bouquets of balloons for each aisle, and provide some Halloween treats for the patients.

Sharing At AA

Today I shared my story at my home group Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Then I stayed after the meeting to talk to two other members about what I had shared.

I talked to a lady who got her one-year-sober medallion. She thanked me and said she had needed to hear everything I said. I hope it helps her continue with her recovery. I also talked to a young man who was struggling with the idea of God's will versus his will.

I had the same struggle when I first got sober, so I shared with him how I dealt with my feelings and have developed a much closer relationship with my higher power.

I hope it helps him with his struggle to get clean.

Caring Through Chemo

I gave my friend, who doesn't drive, a ride to work this morning.

She has stage 3 breast cancer and I have been giving her rides to work while she is undergoing treatment. I also give her rides to appointments and go with her to chemo once a week.

I am not working at present because of my own medical problems. So, not only does this help her, it helps me too by giving me a reason to get up and do something every day!
