A Surprise Snack

My daughter recently returned to work from a maternity leave. And things haven't been going well.

She's had calls two out of six days to pick up sick children. Today was her first full day back, so I left a container of her favorite snack in her vehicle.

She called me later, with her mouth full of the sweet snack, saying, "Are you responsible for this?"

Ha-ha! How did she guess?

A New Birthday Tradition Started a Cycle of Kindness

I spent a few hours today with my younger granddaughter, Anna, in preparation of her upcoming fourth birthday. One of our missions for the day was to work together to do four acts of kindness. We watched this video together: http://www.karmatube.org/videos.php?id=7641. I saw the emotion on her face change as the feelings of the main character changed. I knew she "got it." We talked about being kind to others, I explained our "project" and set off to do some shopping. Anna loves babies and always wants to walk through the "baby aisles." She found a little outfit that she wanted to get. I told her I knew a baby it would fit and showed her a picture of her. Anna's face lit up. We purchased the outfit (on sale!) and went home to make a card to send with it. At the grocery store she got a cookie to take home to Grampa. While ... Read Full Story >>

Adding Beauty To My Neighborhood

To add beauty to my community and hopefully a smile to a neighbor's face I just delivered a chrysanthemum plant to people who recently moved in across the street.

I knew they wouldn't be home so I left it with a Smile Card and a note that said, "Welcome to the neighborhood!"

And, as a side benefit, I'll get to enjoy the plant from my window across the street - without having to take care of it!

Cookie As A Middle Name

Today is the birthday of my elderly (82 years old) friend who has Alzheimer's.

I make a point of visiting him at least once a month. I wanted to take him a card and a treat for his birthday. So, off I went to the memory care unit with my coffee, the card, and some chocolate chip cookies.

He always looks so happy to see me (although today was not his best day.)

So, we were sitting there enjoying our treats while I carried on a mostly one-sided conversation. Just then another resident came wandering over and asked, "Would you have some candy for an old guy?"

I chuckled and said I didn't have any candy - but I had cookies!

Then I looked over at one of the staff members to be sure he could have cookies. I don't need my kindness to cause a diabetic episode!

She assured me it was okay and said that "Cookie" could be his middle name. So, we shared our cookies and more smiles.

It was a very good way to spend my lunch break!

Fun In The Candy Aisle!

I had a bit of fun at my local store today.

As I was checking out with just my normal purchases, I decided to tuck a $1 bill and a Smile Card between two boxes of candy bars in the check out line.

I hope whoever finds it enjoys a good chocolate bar half as much as I do!!
