A Place to Stay

A friend of mine is having financial struggles and has been caught in a bad housing situation. Luckily, I have an apartment and have been able to invite her to stay with me for as long as she needs. I feel honored to be able to help her as she got me through a really bad time. Over the last few years, especially when I was very ill, she has been an amazing friend to me. It's good to be able to return the favor.

Middle-of-the-night errand.

My friend hurt her leg while out in town. Luckily (sort of) we had some crutches at home from another leg injury she had a few weeks ago. I got changed (it was 2am) and ran down into town with them so she could get back okay. I'm so glad I was able to help.

Paper Smiles

I printed out a free 'Take a Smile' poster and put it up in my building. It's been a few days and now there are only two smiles left :) It makes me happy whenever I see it and I hope it gives other people a quick smile, both literal and paper!

Gluten-free ninja kindness

I won a couple of vouchers for my favourite brand of gluten-free products- a relief as these are quite pricy! I stuck a smile card to one and hid it amongst the products of that brand in the supermarket, so someone else can get something yummy to eat and maybe a smile too :)

Cold and Hungry

Started a winter kindness project today. Have been making little 'kits' for the rough sleepers around here. There is a shelter for folk in the winter but there still seem to be a lot of folks on the street. I went out tonight to give them out and was a bit too early- no one had bedded down yet (probably because all the bars were open so there were lots of people about).  But on my way home I found a girl around my age, sitting on the streets in a sleeping bag, asking for change. She was quite possibly on something, as her pupils were blown and she struggled to speak coherently, and my usual instinct is to stay away from addicts who are begging- there are a lot of them around here who aren't actually homeless but make money by pretending to be. However I figure that homeless or ... Read Full Story >>

The Book Fairy

I'm a huge bookworm and love sharing my love of books! So I've been buying book vouchers for £1-£5 and hiding them in or around bookshops, so someone can maybe treat themselves to a new read.

I especially like hiding them in the self-help section, where folks might need a bit of a cheer up. I was delighted the other day when a local bookshop posted to say that a not well-off customer had found one of these tokens, and it had enabled her to buy a gift for her mother. It was so lovely to find out that someone who needed it, found it!

Buying the Baker Her Favorite Treat

I often visit a small shop across the road from me to get lunch from their bakery section. One of the staff at the bakery mentioned having received a distressing diagnosis the day before. She was clearly shaken up by it.

There was nothing I could do about that, except for offering sympathy, but I tried to offer a little kindness. I asked if she could eat the baked goods they sold herself if she needed a treat. She said she couldn't eat them unless they were broken. Under the guise of asking for a recommendation, I asked about her favourite treat, and pretended to be buying it for myself to try. Then I gave it right back to her.

It took her a minute to realize what I'd done, and I left pretty quickly, not wanting to make her feel awkward! I hope it made her day a little bit better, and that she felt like someone cared.
