I arrived on his Birthday in Colombia

On the plane to Colombia I thought about a lot of things. I wanted to be a collaborator so bad, but missions were not really my thing. I was going to be there for only a week, I thought. I was already on my way anyway, I was not going back to Mexico.

When I got to the base-camp in Bogota, I met 6 wonderful girls. I knew I was going with them to missions, and I tried to think of it as a good thing. But it was unsuccessful. I went to bed early that day because we were leaving at sunrise.

Placing my sleeping bag on the floor, I realized I was already there, kids were going to come anytime soon and I was not ready yet. They got there an hour later. I don't understand why, from so many children, I could not stop looking at one in particular.

So I approached him. I saw that he was dirty and his clothes were old. The first thing he told me was that his birthday was that very same day. So I told him to wait for me, meanwhile, I got him a present. I went inside and picked up a plastic ball that was lying in a corner.

When I got back, I told him to close his eyes, and from the moment he opened them, a wide smile spread across his face and did not fade. Just for one plastic ball lying in a corner. I realized he was so happy with so little.

The only thing I had done the past 3 days was complaining about everything. From that moment I learned that the small details in life are what makes it worth it.

Great job!
