Being Smart With The Chocolate

--by RoseMarie, posted Mar 26, 2017

My students were very unsettled when I was off and some found it very hard to stay motivated. I thought about what I could do to motivate them but at the same time, reward those who had worked hard.

They each have a set number of coursework units which must be completed before the end of June. I bought two Very Large Easter Eggs. When a student passes a unit I will give them a raffle ticket for a draw of one of the eggs; one egg for first years, the other for second years. For those who have already completed units while I was off, they will get a raffle ticket for each completed unit. They are smart enough to work our that the harder they work, the greater will be the probability of winning an egg. The first years have a 1 in 4 chance of winning, the second years, a 1 in 8 chance.

They are all loving this idea! I think I will also make a poster so that they have a visual reminder to motivate them. I haven't given out any raffle tickets yet I will do this next week.

I hate to see anybody losing so I'll probably buy little chocolate bunnies or creme eggs for everyone as a consolation prize.

It's better to motivate with a carrot than a stick or in this case, even better to motivate with a chocolate egg, a big one at that!

I anticipate they will all work hard from now until the raffle takes place, exactly what I planned. 🐣 🐣
