Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Leftovers Of Kindness

--by kindness1st, posted Oct 26, 2017
I had the privilege of participating in Karma Kitchen in Berkeley for the first time today. I had a wonderful time washing dishes in the back and doing other tasks to keep the kitchen running smoothly. I entered the dining area only a few times to clear the bus bins but I could feel the community energy and saw only smiles on diners’ faces.

But it was actually after the event was over that was the most impactful for me. We had a few boxes of leftovers after our volunteer family meal so we decided to pass them out to homeless people on the streets of Berkeley.

I had so much fun running down the streets of Berkeley to find people to give boxes to! Although I was tired from a day of dishwashing, passing out these meals at the end of the day gave me a second wind of energy. One person smiled and said “have a beautiful day!” after I gave him the food. Another person was pushing a shopping cart down the street and was initially apprehensive when I approached him, but when I gave him the bag of food, his face turned into a big smile and he said “thank you, thank you.”

Perhaps unbeknownst to them, diners from the previous event not only paid for meals within Karma Kitchen’s walls, but also for a few meals to people outside these walls who need them most. I’m so happy to have been part of this beautiful flow of kindness.
