Stories of Kindness from Around the World

The Unexpected Gift

--by SunGiver, posted Sep 23, 2013
I always share what I have and will give things away when I no longer want them, much to the chagrin of my husband. He has told me many times that if you don't get back close to what you paid for something then you've wasted your money.

Nevertheless, I keep on giving things away.

Just before Christmas I looked at the nearly-new kitchen set my daughter almost never played with, and decided it needed a new home. I contacted the school and asked them to find a needy family who could use a nice, free, Christmas gift for their child. They found a little girl who was new to the district. She had just lost her mother and was living with her grandmother.

When I told this story to my husband he asked, "Should I stop at the store and buy some other toys, too?"

I was pleasantly surprised! He brought home a Barbie doll, a pair of gloves, and a hat to give with the kitchen set. A couple weeks later he said to me, out of the blue, "You know how good we felt giving that gift to that little girl? All year long we should pick up stuff on clearance when we have a few extra dollars, so we have a bunch of presents to give away next Christmas."

It warmed my heart to know that not only had a needy family received a special Christmas gift but my husband also received a gift - the joy of giving!
