Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Emergency Room "Snack Attack"

--by Dozermom2, posted Sep 14, 2013
The last couple of months I've been in and out of the emergency room supporting my elderly father (though I'm happy to report that he's doing better now and has been moved to an assisted living building). I've felt a lot of gratitude during my time at the hospital, and it struck me recently that it had been a while since I had paid it forward.

On the lookout for a chance to spread kindness, a golden opportunity revealed itself in the small room of vending machines located by the emergency room lobby. The hospital was often very busy, and I noticed quite a few children waiting in this area late at night. When the time was ripe, I walked over to a vending machine casually, and pre-loaded enough change so that the next person could select whatever they wanted and get it for free. Along with this, I folded up a Smile Card and placed it sticking part way out of the coin slot to ensure that the next customer would know their selection had already been paid for.

Even after my Dad was admitted to a different area of the hospital, I would visit the emergency room lobby on my way in or out to pre-stock one of the vending machines with change. Though people's reasons for visiting the emergency room may not have been happy or joyful, I'm hoping these anonymous acts helped put a smile on someone's face, even if just for a moment!

My husband was at work, and it was late (we got out at 2am). I was so grateful for the waiting room staff, the police, and the kind people waiting for their loved ones who entertained her and fed her. Thanks for thinking of those kids!
