Stories of Kindness from Around the World

I Can Never Repay You...

--by leneesmail, posted Feb 11, 2015

When I was younger, my children and I went to live in a shelter. The day we arrived, we had five dollars and nothing more. I worried about what I was going to buy with that five dollars for my children to eat. I decided on boxed Mac and Cheese and lunch meat …the shelter was like an apartment and had a kitchen. I bundled my children up and got ready to walk to the supermarket.

When I opened the door, someone had placed a food basket in front of it. There was pasta, a ham, and other assorted canned foods. There were toys for my children, pajamas, and bubble bath and slippers for me. I took the basket inside, cried and thanked whoever left me the basket, and made dinner for my babies.

I found out after that a group of students from the high school up the block (Aquinas, in the Bronx ) made the baskets and delivered them. I don't know who put ours together, but I've always thanked them and often think about it. I thank all the divine for that gift. I was so grateful.

Since then I've tried to pay it forward. One day, I'd like to make a bunch of those baskets and give them out. Until I can, I pay it forward in small ways …paying for the order behind me in line, an extra half hour on the parking meter, things like that.
Thanks for reading my story... and thank you again, Aquinas High School students and Thorpe Family Residence. I will never forget it.
