12: Be A Good Friend

The entire spiritual life is good friendship, good companionship, good comradeship. --Gautama Buddha

Be A Good Friend: In these tumultuous times, who do we turn to for support, advice, and companionship? We've dispersed into our separate shelter-in-place “islands” due to the coronavirus pandemic, yet across the world, our collective refrain is "We're in this together." How can we continue to cultivate the relationships of our interconnections, without the previous structures offered by attending school, going to work or participating in community gatherings and events? What qualities of friendship do we most value? Can we embody those qualities that we ourselves cherish in our good friends? Today, put extra attention into being a supportive friend. Reach out to friends, neighbors, or colleagues to see how they are doing. If you're feeling reflective, write a letter to longtime friends and simply appreciate them for who they are. Or, maybe send them a surprise gift! Today, notice how your perspective shifts as you extend your circle of care to simply be a good friend.
