11: Allow Grief In

Grief and love are sisters, woven together from the beginning. Their kinship reminds us that there is no love that does not contain loss and no loss that is not a reminder of the love we carry for what we once held close. --Francis Weller

Allow Grief In: All too often, we turn away from our pain, distracting ourselves with entertainment or other activities that do not fundamentally serve our best interest. Grieving is one process that allows for a healthy relationship to what we have lost and is vital for healing past losses and accepting new circumstances. This deeply personal process helps us become more intimate with the impermanence of life. In that process we are inclined to find greater kinship with the world, as we learn to see that everyone ultimately shares this same plight. Like spring follows winter or new growth after a fire, gratitude and celebration spring from the soil of loss and grief. Today, reflect on any mental pain or anguish that you might be feeling as a result of the pandemic or other circumstances in your life. The loss may be of a job, a loved one, an anticipated experience, or a previous sense of certainty of how things would have been. For inspiration, these 6-year-olds can teach us all a thing or two about coping with difficult emotions through breathing. Or, one man shares his grief journey around climate change that allowed him to become more available to life. Set aside 5 minutes here and there throughout the day to just breathe and give space to whatever arises for you.
