19: Honor Animals And Wildlife

No matter how few possessions you own or how little money you have, loving wildlife and nature will make you rich beyond measure. --Paul Oxton

Honor Animals And Wildlife: Today is a day to expand our circle of care to non-human beings. If you've had a cat, dog, or any pet, you may relate to the emotional complexity of animals. Can our ethics and compassion extend to our relationships with animals? Today, take steps to offer all living animals the same level of love and care you would give to a treasured pet. It is widely believed that Covid-19 originated in a wet market, and previous epidemics such as H1N1, the Spanish flu of 1918, Ebola, and SARS are similarly attributed to circumstances where animals were confined or captured as food or medicine. The number of animals the average human eats each year has consistently increased, with more and more raised in factory farms, while animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change, the loss of global biodiversity, aquatic “dead zones” and deforestation. You can also learn more about the zoonosis process and how we may be creating the field for pandemics through our habits and policies. Looking at the factors, how can you be a part of the change? Reflect and share different habits to honor all forms of life. Perhaps you'll take time to watch the birds outside your window. Or, when encountering a spider indoors, gently bring it outside. As you prepare and eat your meal today, take time to reflect on where your food came from. If inspired, maybe even join a worldwide prayer circle for animals. As a step-it-up idea, consider making one or all of your meals plant-based today.
