Stories of Kindness from Around the World

The Heart Song And The Scapecoat

Like many in our group, I cannot point to one precious memory. I love the idea of a patchwork heart with life's memories sewn into it. I love the idea of love being the thread. In fact, what a beautiful wall hanging that would make!

In Clarissa Pinkoles-Estes book Women Who Run with the Wolves, she suggests an art therapy in which you create a "Scapecoat." It can be either a literal coat with patchwork squares or designs, or it can be a drawing of a coat onto which we draw our scars/worst memories. She believes our scars define us because it is there when we were learning the most.

When the scapcoats are finished, Dr. Pinkoles-Estes suggests we can either burn the scapecoat as a way of letting go, or display it proudly on a wall as she did because both her scars and her precious memories made her strong and who she is today.

Women Who Run with the Wolves changed my life so much that I bought copies for all my friends when I read it the first time. It inspired most of the poetry in my Moonsongs collection. It inspired me to adopt a wolf from Mission Wolf who became my Rowdy (and still remained, even after death, as my spirit guide).

For a bit about wwrwtw, here's a wonderful article I found today on Medium:  "13 Reasons Why You Should Read Women Who Run with the Wolves."

I believe both a "Scapecoat" and a "Heart Song" are valuable. If anyone is up for doing a Heart Song art project with me, let me know. I'm not good with sewing but I could draw or make one from a graphic. It could easily be done as a 100-day project five minute a day. In fact, that's exactly what I'm going to do. My first 100-day project on Instragram was on post-it notes which became graphics. It took 5 minutes a day, and it felt so good to make art every day. If you'd like to join me, leave a comment below. We'll pick a day, perhaps in January.
