Day 13: Be A More Conscious Consumer
Went to the Local Earth Day Celebration yesterday. Walked over, 1.6 mlies, it was combined with the Children's Fishing Derby which is always fun to see. As I walked around, collecting free pencils for my students, I noticed that all the booths were promoting things I was already doing: low shower head, timers for shorter showers (took one to take to school for a student who needs one to stay on task, he will be thrilled), recycling lists for my blue bin (my blue bin gets more action than the garbage bin each week), ideas for low water yards, etc. So, I collected pencils & another cloth bag. I take my own bags to all stores, & I just realized that May is coming up quickly...Farmer's Market, 1 mile walk, opens May 3. I'm there. Pet Peeve: Electronic purchases. Have you ever thought about the packaging? Boxes within boxes, wrapped in plastic, hard plastic? cardboard 8'"x 6" for an item 1" x 3" that requires very sharp scissors to open? Plastic, styrofoam wrapped in cardboard and all those little black twisty ties? Do you have any idea how many electronic type boxes I have saved in my garage? Just in case one needs to be returned for repair?
Grateful For:
1) Dad - lived through the Great Depression & taught up conservation of resources before it was the thing to do...even if we grumbled at the time
2) Cloth bags for groceries - so much sturdier than paper & animals are hurt as with plastic
3) Timers - can be used for so many things
4) Local Earth Day, & in my area other events, that celebrate & educate us
5) Free pencils made of recycled materials
6) Walking over the bridge (over RR tracks) to next town for Earth Day event without any pain or being out of breath
7) Have 3 totes sorted to go to school
8) Have 3 boxes to go to Goodwill
9) Have 3 full brown grocery bags to go to Friends of the Library
10) Filled my Blue bin (recycling) with sorting from garage
11) Green bin (vegetation) is 3/4 full with Heavenly Bamboo & Jasmine pruning
