Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Clearing The Path

I hadn't seen my little old neighbor friend for a while and was getting concerned that her health had given out. But, then one time after dropping the kids off at the bus stop, I saw her in her doorway early in the morning. She didn't look too good. She looked pretty frail.

I thought about going over, but I decided against it at that moment. I can't remember why. But! I thought I'd make her some cookies. So, I got the kids ;) to make her a bunch. I got the container and our little package was put together.

I placed it near her door the other night, telling her I wanted her to have a little something sweet in case of the storm. (I figured if she had passed, then her relatives and friends could eat it while taking care of her wares.) But! She hadn't!!!!!

Just yesterday - before the storm - I saw her. She looked much better. She said she was feeling very nauseous and was undergoing chemo and radiation in an attempt to keep the cancer in check. She was so thankful for the cookies. I was so thankful for her.

Then, of course, the snow came.

My kickboxing classes were cancelled and I was allowed to go home to work. So before I got down to start writing, I thought I'd go out and clear me walk. So, I did mine. And, I did my two next door neighbors - just this time, lol - 'cause why not?

Then, I thought, shucks! Maria could use a hand, might as well put this kickboxing body to use for something...

So, I went over and did her walk too (as well as the entrance to the communal alley). A nearby neighbor did her steps.

Later, I got a call from her, which was totally unexpected. She was SO happy!!! So happy.

She said I was the biggest blessing on the block.

That made me smile, as did her elatedness over such a little thing.

It was nice to know I had impact, though. You know that's not why I do things, but every once in a while, it's nice to know it meant something ;)
