Their Wants And Needs What ...

Their Wants and Needs
What we want for others may not be in alignment with what they want and need. This is especially true of our elders. We encourage them to exercise as they have been advised by their health care practitioner, but they have no interest and perhaps no energy to do so. They may recognize that moving their bodies is beneficial on many levels but it isn’t always easy with conditions such as arthritis. They may not eat as healthily as they should for conditions such as diabetes or heart disease; comfortable with the foods they have eaten all their lives. They see no need to try new foods or recipes; they are comfortable with the familiar. We may feel that it is time for them to move from the home they have lived in for a long period of time, perhaps to an apartment or even another home with everything on one floor to make life easier and safer for them. But it will not be home for them, simply a place to live away from all that is comfortable and familiar. It is not always easy to simply be there in a supportive role, to listen to concerns, to know that they are happy and content just as they are and only intervene when things become unsafe and dangerous. And even then we will be met with resistance, after all they have lived a full life, looked after themselves and others and have done it well. Please feel free to share, if you are so inspired.
