Touched by kindness

My daughter and myself were driving from Los Angeles to Dallas. We were running low on gas somewhere in New Mexico and figured we'd see a gas station soon enough to fill up. But that didn't happen and we realized we were not going to make it to the next town. So my daughter made up a sign that read "Low on gas. Can u help?" and held it outside her window in the hopes that a driver in the next lane would notice it and stop. There weren't too many vehicles passing us either at the time. It was a desolate stretch of road and about 3.30 pm on a weekday. A suburban was driving along happily in the neighboring lane ahead of us. We caught up with it in the hopes the driver would notice the sign. An elderly gentleman was driving it and after a brief expression of confusion on ... Read Full Story >>

Stranger On The Train

I had to visit my sister in another town because her husband was very ill. My whole family could not go because school was in session. My children stayed back in their father's care, except for the youngest, who was just a year old. I was nervous taking a train journey alone with my daughter. I knew that I had to go, so I gathered all my courage and boarded the train. After waving goodbye to my husband, I settled down. There were three other passengers in that compartment. Two of them were quite elderly, while one was a young man. My daughter was crying, missing her dad. I tried to console her, but to no avail. I tried giving her water, then some biscuits, but her crying would not cease. By this time I was getting worried about the disturbance being caused to the others. One of the oldies was ... May This Gift Turn the Tide

While waiting at the airport for a shuttle to take me home, I overheard a phone conversation a young man was having with a friend. He sat next to me, his small daughter asleep in a stroller, telling his friend that he was on a borrowed cell phone because his wife's bag, with their money, wallets, everything, was stolen.

He had just learned that morning that his father had passed away, (his mother just a few months before) and they were on their way to join family members when they lost everything.

I had a little cash, and offered it to him so they could at least get a cab back home. We exchanged contact info, he expressed deep gratitude, and we hugged as my shuttle ride was called and he left to find his wife. I live on very little, but sharing that $50 felt really good to me.

Intentional Kindness - Giving life a chance

Thursday I dropped the kids off at school and was on my way to the San Isidro feria. On a curve, I passed what looked to be a dead Hawk in the middle of my lane. I swerved to go around it.I glanced back in my rear view mirror and I thought I saw it move. I pulled over and turned around. He was alive! I stopped the car went over to him and picked him up and held him in my arms. I took him quickly back to my car so we would both be out of harms way.Sitting with him in the car and spoke calmly to him. He was beautiful, more than beautiful majestic. I had an animal in my arms that had never had contact with a human being before let alone in one's car. His eyes were brilliant orange. He seemed in shock but not ... Read Full Story >>

Courageous Freeway Kindness Ensures a Man's Safety

One evening I was in Los Angeles traffic navigating rush hour to get to an orchestra rehearsal. Cars were moving in stop and go traffic at a slow pace. Suddenly I heard horns honking, and a crash. Two car lengths in front of me a motorcyclist had fallen down, rolled off his bike and landed on the freeway! I stopped and shouted to find out if he was OK. He did get up and started to walk his bike off the five lane freeway. I then proceeded to block traffic so he wouldn't get run over and followed him to the side of the freeway. Another driver that had also seen him fall pulled over to help. The driver immediately called for paramedics and Highway Patrol. The motorcyclist used my phone to call Triple A for transport, I then waited for the emergency help to arrive and gave CHP my statement.  I'm so thankful the ... Read Full Story >>

I Stood By Her

I was coming back from home late at night in a 'Sharing' mini van. In Hyderabad, India, it is a cheap and quick mode of transport. The van drivers ply as many as 13 people at times in a vehicle which is built for the transport of 8 people. Our van was over crowded as well. People were getting off and on at many places. One girl signaled the driver to stop. She wriggled herself out of the van. While getting down, she tripped and fell. None of us noticed it, as it was dark. The driver was waiting for her to pay. It was then we saw that the girl was on her knees by the side of the road.  Another passenger and I got down and held her up.  Even in pain, she held up a note and asked us to pay the driver. The other passenger took the note ... Read Full Story >>

The Young Girl's 'Guardian Angel' Travel Companion

"Are you going to Seattle?" an anxious-looking woman asked a female traveler at the Amtrak station in Sacramento. "No, I'm going to Eugene", the traveler replied. "Oh, I was hoping you could watch out for my daughter, she's never been on a train before."  Now, seasoned train traveler that I am, I know that seats and cars are assigned by destination, so I approached the woman and her frightened-looking daughter and told them that her daughter could sit with me and that I would take care of her for the duration of the journey. The train had arrived, 25 minutes late, and people rushed to get their seat assignments. The conductor wanted to know if there were people traveling together, so I pushed to the front of the line with the girl and we got seats next to each other. Once on board, I showed her where to put her luggage, and ... Read Full Story >>

The Lost Wallet

I was driving after school on Monday from Dublin to Drogheda and on my way home, I saw a wallet on top of a white car just as he turned into the main road. The wallet fell from the car and I sounded the horn twice but he didn’t hear. So, I checked the wallet to see if I could get any phone number to call.  I found and called two numbers but I was told they were wrong number.

I later found a driving license and used the address to find his estate in Termonfeckin, which is a 15 minute drive away from Drogheda. When I got to his house, I saw his wife and the first thing she asked was if I had found a wallet. I started smiling and I said yes. The lady was really happy and called her husband. He ran to us at the gate and welcomed me to their house. After giving the wallet to him, he checked to see if everything was inside. They offered me 20 euros for gas but I refused it.

The Girl At The Bus Station

Last Friday was a cold day, and the bus was due to come in about 15 minutes. Sometimes I am ok waiting but not this day, so I went to the nearby convenience store and came back to the station where a  junior high school girl was still there,  waiting for the bus too. I gave her one of the two warm cocoa cans I bought and we had a little talk while warming our hands with the hot cocoa. She is to have her high school entrance exam in a week so I told her a few encouraging words. I left her happy,  she thanked me and told me she wished to see me again. I smiled and thanked her very gratefully, nodding yes, the bus had already stopped and I had to hurry away.  We may never see each other again but I am grateful to her for saying "wish I could meet ... Family Gets On Wrong Bus, Bus Driver Then Does The Unthinkable

I was on vacation with my husband, my brother, his wife and daughter. We were not familiar with the area and hopped onto a bus, thinking it would be a nice way to see the downtown's old town area. Well, until visiting with the bus driver, we found out we were on the neighborhood route which picks up school children and delivers commuters to various neighborhood places, with a route of well over about 2 hours. That was a surprise and a concern because we had parked our vehicle in a timed parking area and it was going to expire. We shared this with the bus driver only to let her know we were not from the area and apologized for getting on her bus in error. Then she surprised us further saying, "I get off shift after a few more blocks, and if you don't mind a tight squeeze in ... Read Full Story >>
