Stories of Kindness from Around the World

How John Touched My Life

--by lmil1954, posted Nov 23, 2008

I met him on his birthday when he truned 20 years old.  He was very pleasant and had outstanding, loving eyes.  He reached out his left hand and said, "Nice to meet you."  Nice, indeed.

This young man touched my life as well as my heart in the most profound way.  When my husband met him, he felt the same way.  I got to know him very well over the next year as I had the privilege of "working" with him.  See, he got around using a walker or was in a wheelchair and when it was time to get down, or out of his wheelchair he would crawl!

John is a shining star to me.  My family just adores him.  He loves talking on the phone, singing, "dancing", noise of any kind, toys that wind up, wiggle or glow, music, cheering, "holding" me while watching tv and his never ending collection of keychains.

It broke my heart when I had to give up this part time job of working with John to go back to work full time, but I have not left John.  I call him, visit him as often as possible, pick him up and take him to ChuckECheese and invite him and his Mom to family gatherings.  And I make sure I go clean for his Mom once a month or every other month just to be there.

This weekend I am going to spend the entire weekend with John.  His mom is going away!  I got off my regular job Friday, Saturday and Sunday so I can go stay with him.  Nothing could make me happier.  Although John has the mental capacity of a 5 year old, his heart reflects the heart of a saint.

I am going to have the best weekend!

Perhaps we can see a reflection of God in them because they stand innocently in His presence and have no fear in bringing it back to the real world with them. God bless John and his family and you for being his extended family. Love to you.

I got a wee bit of that the other day. I was crossing a road when a man with Down's was coming from the opposite direction. I smiled and he said Hello. That was all. But he said it with an intensity that touched my soul and left feeling quite emotional when I reached the other side of the road. It was, somehow, as if he knew the very core of me. Weird. And wonderful!
