Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Purse's Precious Content Recovered

--by wayfarer, posted Dec 8, 2008

My young daughter and I were on a local bus a few years back when she found a purse on the floor under a discarded newspaper.

We checked it out. It was almost empty but there was a video store card. So, trying to set a good example, I took Amy with me to the video store where the guy behind the counter gave us a phone number for this particular member.

By now Amy, who must have been about seven, was starting to lose interest. It was a tatty old purse, with nothing in it. Nonetheless, I phoned the number and a woman came to collect it. Amy was there when I handed it over and I could tell she was surprised by how emotional the woman was to get her purse   back. (I was too, a little.)

She tried to give Amy a reward, but Amy (bless her heart) declined. Then the woman opened a little zipped compartment and took out a scrap of newspaper.

There had been cash and other stuff in the purse which were long gone, but she didn't care. She didn't even care about the purse. This scrap of newspaper was all she wanted.

It was her dad's obituary notice from the local paper. She had carried it with her for a few years now and had been devastated at the thought of losing it. Luckily she hadn't.

Hopefully Amy saw how easily an act of kindness can go from nothing at all - to something wonderful!

That says alot about what's really important, and thanks to you and your daughter she can continue to cherish that valuable possession!

Thank you for being kind and setting a good example for the little one. :)
