Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Emergency Rescue by a Father and His Sons

--by speedi, posted Feb 18, 2009

A couple of days ago, we were in Edmonton helping one son move there to live with his brother.  As we were leaving from their apartment complex, we noticed a man driving by very slowly.  We commented how weird it seemed and as we looked back in the mirror we saw he had run off the road into a tree.

We quickly whipped a u-turn and jumped out of our vehicle.  Our younger son reached in and turned off the man's vehicle and my husband and older son tried talking to the older gentleman but got no response.  Fearing he might have choked, they struggled to get him out of the vehicle.  I quickly threw a blanket from our car onto the wet ground.  As soon as they got him out, they laid him on his side where he started choking and spitting up.

My younger son was on the phone to 911 while my husband and son each held one of the man's hands and continued trying to talk to him.  I sat beside him and stroked his neck and kept reassuring him that help was on the way.  When he started to get excited and scared we talked calmy to him and kept him quiet.  I was so amazed by the number of people who slowed down and asked if help was needed, and was everything okay.

When the fire department arrived they assured us we had done everything we possibly could.  They thanked us and asked us to wait for the police.  After the ambulance arrived they were able to get some real responses from the gentleman but he was so confused he even said that the vehicle he had been driving was not his.  They ran a trace thru his ID and handicapped sticker and it was his vehicle.  They also found he had been released from the hospital the day before and their assesment at the scene was that he had had some sort of seizure, so they took him back to the hospital..

I told my husband and sons how proud I was of them for not being afraid to help and "get their hands dirty." They joked later in the day to their friends that they were "heroes" so be nice to them :)  My husband said too bad we didn't have some smile cards to hand out to all those people who cared enough to stop and see if help was needed -- what a guy, eh?

BRAVO! You, ur hubby and kids, all of u r heroes! Also, all those who stopped by to help.

Most of us hesitate to help on the accident sites fearing we might get into trouble. Only if there r many more people like u in the world, many more could be saved, rescued and taken care of.
Ur husband's disappointment for not having smile cards is grately appreciated! How sensitive, caing and thoughtful of him! Very kind of him to have felt gratitude for starngers for a stranger; that man was not even related to you all!
I THANK you all for what u all did.
My love to u, Speedi, the kind soul.
