Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Getting Out What We Put Into The World

--by wayfarer, posted Apr 5, 2009

Since I have come to any kind of spiritual maturity I have believed we get out of this world what we put into it (... and then some!) Usually, the rewards are indirect and sometimes hard to recognise, but every once in a while what you give comes back to you there and then!

A couple of days back my step-son, Josh, was preparing for a big event. Children from his primary school were going for their first trial day at the secondary school, so they would know what to expect when they started after the summer holidays. A big day for an eleven year old lad!

I was in the middle of some stuff when I noticed him searching in a clay pot where we keep pens and pencils. In primary school they use pencils, but secondary kids get to write with pens. And Josh was looking for a pen. He came out with a scrappy old ballpoint that was missing a piece off the end. Uh uh. His big day deserved better than that. So, I stopped what I was doing and went to the drawer where my favourite (expensive) pen lived. I would miss that pen, but this was a special ocassion.

"Joshua," I said in a deep, serious voice. "I hereby pass on my very bestest, favouritist pen to you, the next generation. Guard it well and use it faithfully ...." And so on.  He grinned and said thanks (probably thinking what an idiot I was.) And I went back to work.

Coincidentally, that day was also my birthday, but we were just back from a weekend away and I wasn't expecting any more gifts. Moments after the pen ceremony, Josh fronted up with a big grin on his face and gave me a prettily wrapped box. Surprised, I opened it - and was even more surprised! Inside the box was a beautiful, brand new pen!

Almost like Someone had planned it!  It is so true. Give and ye SHALL receive!

Having a 'blended family' of my own, i know a moment like this can be the cement that bonds.
