Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Forgiveness Is A Gift You Give Yourself

I was travelling between 2 cities overnight by bus. I was new to this place and happened to get off at a stop as suggested by the bus driver. Here, I took an auto cab, telling him to drop me at a bus stop from where i could get a direct bus to my final destination. With de-monetisation difficulties in India, I had very little cash and let the auto driver know , so that he could drop me at the closest point.

The auto driver tried negotiating with me on the way, trying  to judge my situation. He was also trying to find an ATM for me. He was keen to drop me at home, so he could make more money. However, ultimately he realised I was actually out of cash and he better drop me at the bus stop.

This point was not too far away but realizing that I was new, he had quoted extra money; which I had agreed to, being unaware.
At this bus stop, while dropping me off, this driver was feeling awkward about the difficulty I might face by taking a local bus. I had 2 bags of luggage with me which I would need to carry on bus and then from bus stop to home.

The auto driver didn't just drop me off and leave. But he went around finding an auto for me and suggested I take full auto for rs. 60 if I could afford it, or else share the auto with other passengers, paying Rs.30.  I opted for a shared auto. He insisted that sharing may not be comfortable. I could see he was doing all this because he was feeling bad about taking extra money from me.

Later I discovered, he had taken around Rs. 20-30 extra from me. I smiled at his good heart, which made him go beyond his duty to support my situation and feel wrong at cheating me, though it was a very small amount. I felt good about the existing ethics in the city.
