Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Fishing Lesson

--by followerofHim, posted May 9, 2009

I went to the pond with my kids and a few young boys were wandering around as we fished and came by and I said "hi" and asked if they liked to fish.  They said they never had.  I gave them my pole and showed them how and in the course of the two hours, taught he and three other kids how to cast and put a worm on a hook as the kids shared stories of their home lives. I cried that night thinking of their stories of parents with alcoholism, anger, and seeing their need of positive input into their lives, etc.

These kids needed an adult to care.  It scared me to think of my kids out there talking to strangers, and so needy and hurting. I just listened and encouraged them, hoping they would take away something positive.  I let them know I believed they would not be like thier parents, that I believed in them and would always pray for them and I do. I also encouraged them to forgive.

I saw one kid at the park a month later and he remembered me.  He seemed upset when my kids did not mind me and we talked about how I still loved them and they too are loved of God even when they do not mind at times.  This concept seemed to puzzle the kid.  He said, "you are a good lady, I like you."  I could not help it and I teared up and told him he made me cry tears of joy because he has a gift to encourage and had greatly encouraged me with his words.  Pray for Diego and his brothers and the many others he represents.  I believe we all can make a difference in the lives of children, we just need those blessed opportunities. The children are the future, they need to know it is bright because of them!
