Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Making Friends in a New Country

--by alikhan2008, posted May 28, 2009

One day I went to meet my friend inside of Victoria Station in London.  When we went outside, two guys came to us and they asked, “Where are you from?”  My friend asked them, "Where are you from?", but but they did not understand the English.  My friend said, “We are from Afghanistan.” They were very excited because we could speak their language. They straight away started to talk in Farsi with us.

They asked us for some help because they had just arrived in England. They first of all asked for a phone to make a call, so my friend gave him the phone. One of the boy's called his friend, but his friend did not answer. He was very upset about that. My friend said to me, “Remember Iranian, people hate Afghan people and Afghan people hate Iranian too."   After my friend said that to me I replied, “Not everyone is the same.  Some might be nicer than we think”."  He agreed.

I suggested to him that we go to the shop and buy a phone card for these guys.  We bought a phone card for them for five pounds so they could ring their family in Iran. He was very happy to talk to his Mum.  One of the guy's was very hungry and very scared about something but we didn't know what that was.  We went to a chicken and chips shops to buy some food for them.  After the boy ate his food and said to his friend, “What are you going to do now?” The other boy said, “We will wait for my friend to answer the phone when he answers the phone I know he will come to pick us”. He stayed with us and came with us all day until his friend came to  take him.
