Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Her Flight Plans Changed And A Stranger Stepped In Unexpectedly

--by LiliAB, posted Jan 17, 2017
Last Tuesday as I was seeing my husband off on his return trip back to California, I was notified by text from the airline that my plane, though at the terminal, was having mechanical issues that would require a day long adventure ending up in Baltimore at 9 pm.

Missy, " Lady Bug lover" was my seat mate on the plane to Baltimore, and she invited me to be her house guest, even though we had been strangers prior to being seat mates on the plane. I felt that I was called to accept her offer and with my overnight bag in hand, Missy drove me to her lovely home in the suburbs of Baltimore. I found ladybugs in her son's bathroom, though it is now the middle of January, and the ladybug population is typically dormant.

As a child, Missy's family nicknamed her "Ladybug" as she was often out of doors finding her solace and joy in nature. Missy and I have much in common, both with grown college age children, a love of seeking the light and innate arching towards hope and optimism in all situations that we do not understand nor control, both concerned by the divided tone and disparaging events of this past election season, spiritual twins from different mothers.

To be in her presence was a true balm to my weary traveler soul. I was refreshed in the early morning light as Missy dropped me off on her way into the city. I have learned a kindness lesson from this lover of lady bugs. Be present when you are called to serve, and trust your inner voice. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a meal, a quiet respite in her home, and times of laughter as well. If and when we ever cross paths again, know this, Missy you have my friendship and my unconditional thanks. Be well my friend until we meet again.

Our flight had been cancelled and all hotel vouchers for rooms were gone. She was behind me in the rebooking line and while ai was successfully rebooking the first flight out the next morning, she tapped me on the shoulder.

I know you don't know me, but if you trust me and we work together, we can make this work." I just knew it was ok. So I asked if there were two seats available and was told yes. So she gave them her info and we were booked. She then asked for me to wait for her there and said she was going to go make a phone call to get us rooms. Really had to go on faith with this as I had no idea where she was calling. She came back in just a few minutes and said we had rooms for the night. Turns out her husband worked in the main management office for Hilton! He not only found us rooms, but had a shuttle on the way to pick us up and had arranged for another one to pick us up in the morning to get back to the airport. I profusely thanked her. She just smiled and said, "Now, let's go get our luggage.it will be waiting for us. My husband called about that, too!" So we did and there it was! When we got back on the plane the next morning I really felt like thanking her again and giving her a hug. As we were hugging, she said, "I think we can say that we have met each other's guardian angel!" She was so right!
