Stories of Kindness from Around the World

She Saw This Little Girl In The Ladies Room With No One To Help Her, So She Stepped In

--by RoseMarie, posted Jan 23, 2017

I went to the cinema this afternoon to see La La Land. Before going into the screening my sister and I visited the Ladies' cloakroom. As we entered a little blonde haired girl about 5 years of age opened one of the cubicle doors, sparkly hot pants in hand and looking distressed and overwhelmed, she ran out of the Cloakroom.

I went after her. Her dad was standing outside. She quickly gave him the hot pants to dress her. Little sweetheart. Not only was she probably overwhelmed at having to go into the Ladies alone but there were about 12 cubicles. On top of that, she obviously couldn't manage to button up her sparkly front ribbed hot pants hence the fast exit. Even though she had her little white tights on, she must have felt embarrassed about the lack of hot pants.

I tried to calm and reassure her saying  when I saw dad standing outside I knew he was waiting on someone very pretty, I just hadn't realized how pretty she was going to be. She didn't bite, dad smiled though. I offered to bring her back to wash her hands, she was having none of it.

As I went back into the Ladies I heard dad tell her to go wash her hands. She was too tiny to squeeze soap out of the dispenser Awh, so I helped her. I could see poor dad out of the side of my eye, he was right at the door looking in. I went with her to the hand dryer, she was so tiny the sensor couldn't even detect her little hands. I lifted her up and hands were duly dried, well at least a little.

Then she made a bolt for the door. I followed but once I could hear dad speak I turned back. I could hear him say 'Thank you'.

I was moved by this little girl's vulnerability in an adult world. I also felt for dad having to trust that his little girl would feel safe and secure albeit for the few minutes out of his sight.

I reached out. I tried to bridge the gap when a little vulnerable girl was a few minutes without a trusted adult and a  concerned father had to momentarily accept he could not give her the security he wanted for her.  It wasn't much but it helped a caring father and his little daughter and for that,  I'm grateful. We accept mothers taking little boys into the ladies but dad's can't take a little girl into the gents. It is hard. You helped make it easier for him and the little darling.
