Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Homeless Woman's Kindness Touches Her To A Point Of Tears

--by purelove, posted Jan 24, 2017
She was sitting outside an ice-cream shop, dirty clothes, rough hair, disturbed and gloomy. She got up and walked, it seemed quite difficult, her legs were shivering and her eyes showed deep grief of being left alone and homeless.

I didn't want an ice cream, so I was outside the shop, observing her, while my family went in. She needed to use the bathroom and had no place to do so. Her legs were weak. She was on the road on her own. I saw her difficulties and went by, with Rs. 100 in my hand and handed it over to her. She was so thankful and started blessing me instantly.

I wanted to converse with her as that seemed very important as well. I asked her about her family.  There was no one she said, all died one by one, with tears in her eyes.

'Where does she live?'  and the response given as quite obvious - on the same footpath. I noticed her 'luggage', she had two plastic bags . containing her belongings -  which did not contain any bedding or sheets etc. At this point, I gave her my warm, thin stole. It was bright yellow and looked new.

But she was not ready to accept it. "What? Why?"  I wondered. Her concern was that I had only one drape with me and that seemed new. I am teary eyed as I write this but yes - being on road without any warm stuff , she was worried about my feeling cold for few minutes until I reached home. She finally took the stole and covered herself, when I persisted. She was blessing me even more.

I checked my bag and kept giving anything which I thought she could use. Soaps just purchased, and little things of daily use were all I could find and gave them her. She was grateful.

My next concern  was if she had had dinner and I learned she hadn't eaten anything. I kept looking around for some food and found none - so I bought her an ice cream cup. She again kept blessing me and had the ice-cream with interest and hunger.

All this while, I saw change in her mental and emotional state of mind. By this time, she seemed calm and content. And so did I.
The look of desperation and miser-ability was transformed. She looked at the people who passed us by with more trust in that moment. I had originally met her with a disturbed state of mind but was feeling peaceful within, reciprocating my new friend's state of being.

I still sense subtle joy within and am so happy that I interacted with this woman in a kind way today.
