A New Birthday Tradition Started a Cycle of Kindness

I spent a few hours today with my younger granddaughter, Anna, in preparation of her upcoming fourth birthday. One of our missions for the day was to work together to do four acts of kindness.

We watched this video together: http://www.karmatube.org/videos.php?id=7641.

I saw the emotion on her face change as the feelings of the main character changed. I knew she "got it."

We talked about being kind to others, I explained our "project" and set off to do some shopping. Anna loves babies and always wants to walk through the "baby aisles." She found a little outfit that she wanted to get. I told her I knew a baby it would fit and showed her a picture of her. Anna's face lit up. We purchased the outfit (on sale!) and went home to make a card to send with it.

At the grocery store she got a cookie to take home to Grampa. While we were at it, we also got cookies for her to take home to her mom, dad and older sister. (BTW, when Anna gave Grampa his cookie, he showed kindness by sharing with her. It's contagious!)Grampa. While we were at it, we also got cookies for her to take home to her mom, dad and older sister. (BTW, when Anna gave Grampa his cookie, he showed kindness by sharing with her. It's contagious!)

And finally, when we got home, Anna wanted to water my flowers. (That's a big job!) She did let me help her carry and hold the watering can when it was full and heavy, and she did water the grass nearly as much as the flowers. But she was SO proud of herself!

I believe I have a new birthday tradition with my grand-girls. The elder turns six in August. I wonder what she'll want to do . . .
