Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Turning Tragedy Into Triumph

--by tfitzwater, posted Jul 3, 2017
From the day he was born he roared, and he never stopped. He was smart, fun, loving, fearless, unpredictable, outgoing, loyal, witty, creative, thoughtful, respectful, and a shoulder for everyone. On a rainy-day Cameron died in a car accident driving to work after school; just 2 months shy of graduation.

The community cried. Cameron touched so many lives in his short time here on earth and continues to touch lives today though the good works he left behind, and the legacy he left in the hearts of all who knew him.. His friends remember going with him on his crazy adventures camping, swimming the width of the lake just for fun to volunteering the night a tornado hit our town. He is remembered for his sense of humor, his ability to make any situation into a good one, his big bear hugs, and his contagious smile. He inspired others to love God, appreciate nature, live big, dream big, embrace their fears, and to never give up. He lived life to the fullest, but more importantly he lived life out loud.

After seeing all of the distraught faces, the tear-filled eyes, and heard all the stories of Cameron, the Cameron Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship Fund was created. Four, $1000 scholarships are awarded annually. The goal is to ensure the Class of 2012’s children will be able to apply for the scholarships when they are seniors. The scholarships are funded by the annual “Color Me Cameron” 5K Color Run/Walk, hosted by his mom, dad, and friends.

Through the kindness of others, donations pay for the needed supplies, allowing all participant fees to go directly to the scholarships. 250+ volunteers, participants from the least 8 states, and 75 cities/counties in VA. Turning tragedy into triumph by celebrating Cameron’s life and the lives of others has helped everyone. Cameron wrote; “Kindle the fire within yourself. Use its light to stay the path. No matter how hard it gets stay ever cheerful.” This is how Cameron lived his life each day.

This is a lesson to all that our legacy is what we do to make a difference in others' lives. How wonderful of his family to give forward to others' , too!
