Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Persistent Doves

"So, you interested in all this stuff?" I asked the young man sitting beside me under the shade tent, as we waited for the shuttle bus to the Sanford Lab Underground Research Facility hoistroom tour.

"Oh, yeah," he grinned. "I'm going to the School of Mines science camp tomorrow for a week too."

Found out he was a junior in high school and lived on the other side of the state.

And he wants to be a physicist when he grows up.

His mom and aunt sat down and we all had a nice chat about how interesting the neutrino research facility was in the process of becoming.

We spoke a few more times during the tour and the young man was even interviewed at random to appear on the labs online page.

There just seemed something so special about him. The way he held himself tall and straight, the way he looked everyone right in eyes with an honesty and eager to learn attitude, respectful too.

Before their little party got immersed further into the science and tech experiments being held in the common room, and we went our separate ways, I gave them each a Peace dove, slipping a folded twenty dollar bill into the wing of the young man's.

"Oh!" exclaimed the aunt, "I found one of these in the restroom at the Visitor's Center and put in on the sink ledge. I thought someone had forgotten it!"

"Well, I think you were so meant to have a dove! Look, one came back to you!" And true, out of all those people there, a Peace dove was determined to reach her.

When the young man discovered the money in the dove's wing said, "You don't have to do this."

"Please, I want too," and I explained a bit about the Peace doves and how I'm a part of an online community dedicated to kindness and gave them a Smile card too.

He finally accepted with a dear thank you and such a sincere smile.

Later, his aunt returned and thanked us again, saying how his mom was a single mom and how he was always so careful with spending.

"We think he should run for president someday," his aunt said.

I agreed.

Be open to the conversation and connect available in the person next to you. Who knows? Could be the next president in the making.
