Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Holiday Gift For Dad

--by kjoyw, posted Dec 22, 2017
While chatting with a cashier yesterday as I was purchasing a little tree, some lights, and decorations to put together for my Dad, he asked what I would be doing with this little tree. I explained that it was not for me, but for my Dad, as he no longer lived at home.

The cashier just stopped and looked at me with the most compassionate and kindest look and shared with me that his Grandfather couldn't live in their home any longer either. He said his Grandfather was living now in a facility for those who had dementia and Alzheimer's. So I shared with him that my Dad was on the same journey. We talked about the difficult challenges that come with this relentless disease, not only for those with the illness, but for their families, as well. He had finished ringing up my purchases, but then he said, "Since this is for your Dad, let me see what I can do for you." He took out some coupons from a drawer and started scanning them until my cost was reduced by over 60%.

I gratefully thanked him and told him how much I appreciated his kindness and also talking with him. We wished each other Merry Christmas and the best possible hopes for our loved ones. And then it was time for me to go.

On the way home I kept thinking of the kindness he had offered me with all the items I had purchased for my Dad. But I was most grateful for the gift of our sharing and the opportunity for us to connect about an experience we are both going through. It was truly a 'Kindness Given, Kindness Received' moment. I decorated Dad's tree as soon as I got home. So grateful. So blessed.
