Stories of Kindness from Around the World

This Month Has Been Miraculous

This month has been one of the most challenging and most beautiful months of my life. I suppose that's what happens when you're dealing with life and death.

Just before Christmas, as many of you know, my Grandmother passed away. We'd been taking care of her at home after her stroke, and it was difficult to watch her slowly drift away from us. At the same time, it was incredible to see the love of family and friends, as they pulled around us to support us during a very painful time.

When she finally passed, I resolved to do 92 acts of kindness in January -- one act of kindness for every year of her life -- as a testament to her memory. I wrote an article where I outlined my project, and I updated it frequently to keep track of each act of kindness. Then very suddenly, miracles began to roll in.

A wonderful reporter caught wind of my story, and she allowed me to share my Grandmother's story and photos on the local news. I began doing what I could each day -- paying for someone's coffee, leaving little kindness notes, preparing a care-kit for someone who is homeless. People began to find the story, and it spread. A woman in Arizona, who leaves beautiful handmade windchimes on trees around her city, made one for my Grandma. The person who found it reached out to me to tell me they would pay it forward. One man bought three space-heaters for a single mother and her two children, who were without heat this bitter Winter. Each time, I was moved by the extreme generosity people were doing in my Grandmother's name.

CapBlack introduced me to KindSpring -- and you all have inspired me more than any community I've ever seen. People happily leaped up to lend a hand in reaching 92 acts of kindness. All the way in Scotland, KindSpringers began messaging me to tell me about good deeds.

And the blessings continued -- people began empowering me to do more acts of kindness by mailing me packages of beautiful handmade crafts, kindness cards, peace doves, smile rocks, affirmations, and more. Whereas I had been spending a lot of my own money trying to buy candies and coffees and goodies for kindness bags, I suddenly had more than enough wonderful, beautiful items to hand out. What a joy - to be able to spread these incredibly beautiful objects, and know that finding them will add magic to someone's day.

Each time someone sent me a message about an act of kindness, I'd get a moment of pure joy, and know my Grandmother's life was still impacting the world.

And each time I could go do an act of kindness, empowered by the goodies sent by caring people, I had a beautiful distraction from the sorrow. I could remember that no matter what happens in life, there are still amazing and kind people, and I still have the ability to change the world.

That joy is a balm for the grief. Life ends, but kindness still goes on.

Thank you for helping me reach--and wildly surpass--my 92 acts of kindness goal.

I am inspired by your beautiful kindness. My great aunt who was so graceful died on December 31st of last year and it is difficult. But she was one of the most graceful people I've ever known. I pray to have her gracefulness through life. Thank you for your kindness.
