Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Generosity That Goes Around Comes Around

--by KindFool, posted Oct 26, 2009

The other day I noticed a young woman, very close to my own age, walking by the store front.  I thought she was a student at the local college, mainly due to the fact that she was carrying her books and supplies.  She stopped and looked through the window with a somewhat sad look on her face.  The next day, around the same time, she stopped by again, the same thing as the day previous.

I came to the cafe this morning, after having made a comment of how cold it was outside.  The region experienced a drastic drop in temperature last night to around 27 degrees Fahrenheit.  I noticed the time was getting close to be around the same time as the previous two days when I had seen the young woman, so I looked for her.  I saw her slowly approach the store.  She looked as cold as ever.  She didn't stop as long due to being frigid, so I ran outside before she was able to get out of ear shot.

I asked her to come inside and to select a hot beverage of her choice.  She was amazed, and fairly shy about the situation. After a brief conversation, I learned that she is a college student that was relying on skipping the occasional meal with her meal pass in order to have enough to eat at the end of the month.  She no longer had enough meals on her card because she had met a college freshman who had lost his meal card, and she was sharing her card to make sure he had enough to eat until his replacement had come. Her generosity and kindness returned to her as I was able to provide her with a hot cup of coffee and a bagel for her walk to school.

She asked how she could repay me, and I told her she already had, by being kind to another stranger by giving him food to eat.
