Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Sometimes the time is right to let go

A friend lent me a book. It was a book about flowers, and trees. For various reasons, it was special in my hands and heart. Maybe it felt good in my hands because I'd lost material items in a house fire. Or maybe it felt good in my heart because it was handed to me with love. Either way, it was a simple joy.

Some weeks later I had a tire blow out, at the worst time of day-dusk. I had my two babies in tow and no spare tire. We were in a canyon with no cell reception. And to top it off the only family I had in town-were out of town.

Luckily, I don't panic when it comes to basic survival skills. I set up a picnic area and got the scooters out from the trunk for the kiddos. I then checked my surroundings. Easy enough, we'd be fine for a night if need be.

Soon I spotted three young adults coming off the river with their kayaks. I instinctively said, "Hi boys, today's your lucky day. You will be doing a random act of kindness. You are giving a lady and her kids a ride to town." They looked at me as if I were joking or crazy. It didn't take long before their instincts kicked in. They realized I wasn't asking.
Well, the young adults' random act of kindness was put on hold.

A middle aged couple stopped and asked if they could help, offering a ride to town. I felt sad because I had no cash to offer the kind people. During our journey to town (45 minutes) we got to know each other. I learnt the husband was an avid gardener.

I had brought my special book. Here it comes again I thought, sadness. I had lost everything in the fire, and then some. Again, sadness soaked in. Parting with "things" had become the new norm. I didn't want to part with the book or "let it go." Then peace filled me. Let it go. A phrase I truly loathe but was able to thank the Universe for again, keeping love and life simple.

Having my babies safe allowed me to peacefully tuck the book under the drivers seat.
