Growing up, it was my father who taught me compassion through modeling. He was a foreman who works in construction sites. It has always been a routine for me as I grow up seeing other construction workers who worked with him to go to our house every Saturday because that's when he would give their salary for the week.
I know my father as someone who is a quiet man, just observing everyone around him. He is someone who is strict when it comes to discipline but I never felt threatened being rai
sed by him. Maybe that is because I have seen his gentleness and compassion to us and to others. Since he is a foreman, I would often see him talking to the construction workers whenever they had problems. He is like a father or a brother to them too.
One time, he came home and told me that he would treat me because he had received his salary. Later that day, his friend, a fellow construction worker, came to our house just to talk to him and ask for advice as to where he could go to seek assistance for his sick child. I saw how my father listened and patted his friend's back while his friend was crying. When his friend was about to go home, my father got his wallet and gave his salary to his friend, leaving only 2000 pesos in his wallet.
I was so shocked when he did that, and so proud that my father was willing to give almost all of his salary to help his friend. It is a lesson I will always remember.
