Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Warmth for the body and the soul

This is so easy, inexpensive, and has always brought either of two reactions: a look of shock or a big smile. I am a cane walking senior lady with mobility issues, especially in cold weather but I have a keen eye for useful bargains and since I still drive, I can do this without having to get in and out of the car to help folks.

Here is how it 'works'....when I see gloves, warm hats, and scarves on sale (new or in good condition from a thrift store) I buy them for pennies of what they could go for retail. If laundering is needed, I do it to remove tiny stains so everything looks good.

I have a large basket with a handle that I keep in the passenger side of my car and I 'file' these things in it where I can easily reach over and get whatever I determine is most useful for someone who is without and out in the cold (not joggers, of course, as most of them are bundled in fashionable attire).

I am always alert in parking lots and along the walkways of my small hometown (Mount Airy, North Carolina of Andy Griffith's tv show fame where we're depicted as helpful, kind, and thoughtful toward folks in 'need' of one kind or another. But, when I see someone obviously cold and without what will help them, I pull up beside them, roll down my window, and ask if they will please accept and wear all three things or whatever is needed...and then as they stare at me in disbelief I always add: " I have things right here in my basket to share, please me by wearing them to stay warm when you are outside."

I had an adoring aunt whose legacy was to tell us to go put on a sweater or coat because SHE WAS COLD! We still chuckle about that and it went on for years, she lived to be 102!

Not yet have I met with hostility or felt in any danger....but since so many of the items are 'cheerful' colors I often see later on the person walking down the street.....maybe the same person I gave them to or someone he or she has shared with. It warms my heart. I often feel I should ask the person where they got their attire, but for now, it warms my heart to know that my items are being used and appreciated.

sandra wrote: Truly the warmth of the garments and the kindness not only warmed the bodies you shared with, but it is good for the soul of both the giver and receiver. Luke 6:38 - give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
May you all benefit from god's blessings and you continue your acts of kindness!
