Turning Their Trash Into Our Treasure

--by robcpayne, posted Jan 6, 2010

Expert yard sale shoppers often say, “One person’s trash is another’s treasure.”

Our yard sale was a couple of weeks ago and we were blessed to have lots of friends donate lots of things.

On “Sale Saturday,” I opened the garage door at 5:30 a.m. to start moving the empty tables out so I could fill them with merchandise. I listened for Marcy on the monitor until Kara arrived at 8:00 a.m. to watch Marcy so I could be free to care for customers shopping the yard sale. By then I had everything out and organized and had already sold half a dozen things. We had a steady stream of people all day.

Things started slowing down around 1:00 p.m. or so.  I'm guessing we sold a little over half the stuff we had available for sale. Marcy wanted to keep leftovers to put them in future yard sales, so I packed them back up and stored them in the garage.

had found the day to be a great deal of hard work and was glad that we had made a decent amount of money to show for it, and still had some merchandise to put in the next yard sale.

Then, this week, as we were going through our mail, Marcy and I found an envelope addressed to us with our address as the return address so we had no idea who it was from.

Inside was a card, which simply read:

Proceeds from our garage sale. Hope it comes in handy.”

No signature, but a cashier’s cheque for about two-thirds of what we had deposited from our sale! How great! An anonymous person or family created this wonderful ‘treasure’ for us from their ‘trash’!

The money is great, but moreover all the work the people must have put in. I think about all the work that we did for our sale. And ashamedly, while I was doing it, I grumbled to myself about having to schlep all that stuff all over the house. I looked at that cheque and realized another person or family had done all the same work – all as a gift, without any personal gain. How wonderful is that?

We are so blessed to be able to continue living on gifts such as these.

Marcy is still in my prayers.
