A Calm Intervention In A Tense Situation

--by cabbage, posted Jan 26, 2010

My family and I were waiting in a long line to checkout at a garden/nursery store today.  All of a sudden an older woman got very loud and huffily started yelling at another older woman for "cutting" in front of her.  The second woman didn't know that we were in one line for two registers and everyone just went to the next open one so she had just stood behind one of the registers. My husband intervened and calmly tried to soothe everyone's feelings by politely explaining to the yelling lady that the other lady simply didn't know, and then he sweetly told the second lady not to worry and explained how the line worked. I stood there silently applauding his tact!

Apparently I wasn't the only one....when we got to our car, two separate people came up to him and said "You are very diplomatic, sir..thank you for preventing those two ladies from getting so worked up!" :-)

As we were loading the car, I was thinking to myself how great it was that my husband had such a considerate nature.  As these thoughts were running through my head, my husband asked our son to go and help an older man load his car and take his cart back to the store.....
