A Treasured Gift For A Young Couple

--by duchess, posted Feb 18, 2010

I met a really nice young couple about a year ago through mutual friends on a social networking site.  They have just adopted a baby girl.  This is a beautiful gift to the world on its own, but what makes it even more special is how many hoops they jumped through and how much time and money they spent to get to that stage.

I was going through some boxes from my mother’s house (she passed away at Christmas time in 2007) and I found some beautiful vintage baby dresses. So I thought, wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if I sent some of this lovely vintage clothing to the couple for their adopted baby?  I knew they would love it.

This was truly a gift from the heart; I had planned on saving those for my daughter if I had one someday.  But, given that my husband died before we had any children, I thought that instead of holding onto these dresses now, the next best thing would be to pass them along to someone who would really appreciate it. I couriered the dresses to the United States (I live in Canada).  It was quite expensive but something that I really wanted to do.  I knew this would deliver a big smile and I figured that you just couldn’t put a price on that ;-)

I heard from my “virtual friends” a few days ago to say that the package had arrived.  They were so overjoyed.  They couldn’t believe that I would take the time, trouble and cost of sending them these clothes when I had never even met them.  They kept thanking me.

In comparison to some of the stories that I have read on this inspirational site, this might not rank up there as the most heroic of gifts, but it was a gesture from my heart and I wanted to share it. When you get right down to it, I really don't know these people and they don’t know me.  We have exchanged a couple of correspondences, but we’ve never met.  In reality we are virtually strangers, but as I said to them, every smile is a gift and every kind word is a treasure and we’ve got to keep spreading them.

It does get expensive, but usually comes back in ways not expected or even understood, like my life which has evolved into something i could not have planned or foreseen. Thankyou once again duchess/lady.

My daughter also adopted a child and had to jump through hoops, spend oodles of money, etc. But it's all worth it. Our darling grandchild will be 1 year old next month and is the joy of the family! You are so kind and i can only imagine the look on their faces when that package arrived!

Have a sunshine day! :)
