A Valuable Lesson Learned From My Child

--by palthi, posted Feb 10, 2010

I always try to encourage my children to be, think and talk positive but one day I was caught not practicing what I preach by my son.

My son is 7 ½ yrs old son and he was preparing for a sketch at his school for the occasion of Mother’s day. He was playing the role of an angel. On the evening before the show, we were having a casual conversation while I was preparing dinner in the kitchen.  He asked me: “Mum, can we see angels?” As usual, I seized the opportunity to encourage him to be positive and I said: “Yes, but only those who are, think and talk good can see angels.” He responded by asking: “You must have seen them then?”

I paused a few seconds. I was touched by his innocence about the fact that how he thought his mother was a perfect person. Impatiently waiting for his answer, he looked in my direction, expecting a positive answer. I chose to be honest with him and told him: “No. I’ve not been a good person all the time.” I was almost ashamed to admit this to him, thinking that his picture of a perfect mother will now surely be torn into pieces. But he took it positively and answered: “It’s alright. You know to try to be better from now on.”  I smiled as I replied, "That's right.  Sometimes, we might make a mistake, but when we do, we must always try to do better."

My son's priceless words struck me right in my heart and are always with me. I learnt a valuable lesson that day "to always try to be better" and this will always help me in all situations where I’ll need to be, do and think positive.

True, sometimes, we might make a mistake, but when we do, we must always try to do better. "

Palthi, your son is lucky to have such a honest and caring mother.

Mother is the first teacher of a child. The way we teach and what we teach guides the destiny of the child.
