Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Learning About Compassion at the Train Station

--by monkeyinpajamas, posted Apr 24, 2010

I was standing platform at the train station, waiting for my train to come. I was in a joyful mood.  All morning, I had been witness to some awesome small acts of kindness :-)

My aunt  had packed me a wonderful lunch in a box with napkins and water, (reminding me of going on a picnic :) ) for my journey.  She works in a big finance firm but she still found the time to make me lunch early in the morning.

My uncle and cousin had insisted on dropping me off at the station even though that might make them late for work.

I was happily waiting for my train, enjoying the scenic station with its old laburnum trees and slow trains puffing along. Thats when I saw an old lady in front of me, accompanied by someone who looked like her daughter. Another lady (maybe her other daughter ) had come to say goodbye to her. I could see that she walked with great difficulty and had plenty of luggage.

Once the train arrives I knew that it would only wait for 4 minutes - a short time. I went up to the lady's daughter and asked if I could help the old lady. She smiled gratefully, and asked if I could help the old lady board the steep steps of the train. I held her and we hoisted her up. The train was about to leave and I only carried a backpack so I took some of the lady's baggaged and brought it in through the next compartment.

I placed all their luggage in her seat :-) and left smiling.

When I reaching my seat, I opened the book I had brought for the journey. Inside it, my cousin had so thoughtfully placed a wonderful bookmark which read -

"Genuine Compassion is not pity or feeling others are below you, rather it is the feeling that others are as important as yourself. It is based on the recognition that others have a right to happiness just like yourself, and it extends to everyone irrespective of whoever they are."

What beautiful ways in which life teaches us about compassion!

You are lucky have kind hearted uncle and cousin who dropped you at the railway station. This shows that we can always help some one anywhere if we resolve to do some good act very day. Your kind help made the journey of the old lady comfortable as she could board the train well in time. May god keep your helping spirit alive? Have a nice week with smiles.
