Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Supporting A Daughter's Kindness Mission

--by shutterfly, posted Jul 3, 2010

I wanted to share my daughter's kindness idea which came to her through her school's reading program. We had ordered some books through the school reading program and in the pack she received, there were a couple that didn't interest her.  She asked if we could send them to kids in Africa that didn't have books?  This question sparked a conversation about how we might do that and the momentum took hold.

She is going to talk to the teacher in charge of the student council to see what she can come up with.  She is excited by the idea of collecting books and sending them to developing countries for the purposes of setting up libaries in the villages or schools there so that they might benefit from the joy of reading as my daughter does.  She has been talking for a while about starting her own charity...and books happen to be a passion of hers.  We are now embarking on the challenge of figuring out how to carry out her idea and bring it to fruition.

I have no idea about the logistics of this task, but I am sure not going to tell her its too hard or we don't know how...I am going to find out how.

So, if anyone who reads these stories has any information about the need for reading books in schools in developing countries, how to get them there, who to contact to set up libraries, I would certainly appreciate the help.  If you have children's books you would like to donate new or used books in good condition, you may contact me for information.

This may be a place to start. Good luck with your mission!

Our school had a program like that called "Bridge to Africa"--it was helpful that a sister of one of our parents was actually in Africa and could help coordinate, but I'm sure you will find the right resources to help your daughter's wonderful idea come to fruition! Bless you both! :-)
