Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Friends On the Street

--by missjudy2loc, posted Mar 1, 2022
I'm homeless and living in a shelter. On Thursday I went to a job interview and because I knew I'd miss lunch at the shelter, I spent the last of my money on toothpaste and a celebratory pack of cookies at Dollar Tree. I decided to keep walking and see if I'd make it, and I did!

The next day I forgot I still had the cookies in my coat pocket as I headed out (we have to leave the building as soon as the temperature hits 45 degrees). Someone's dogs came bounding over, apparently recognizing a dog lover when they see one.

Well, two of the dogs went running towards a very busy street. I suddenly remembered the cookies and drew their attention back to me just before they ran into traffic; I used the cookies to lure them back towards safety and gave them a talking to about dogs and traffic and going home to their mama.

I heard a whistle which the dogs also recognized, and there was their owner, probably wondering who this crazy woman was talking to his dogs! He waved and they ran back inside their fenced yard. WHEW!
